ABOUT SMAAC

Since 1981, the Santa Monica Amateur Astronomy Club has been bringing people together to better appreciate, understand and view the natural wonders of the universe.

Our group is open to everyone and many members live outside of Santa Monica. If you are an expert, we welcome any special experience you can bring to the club. And if you are a beginner, we will be delighted to share our resources. We are always pleased when people ask to look through our telescopes, because we believe everyone should have a chance to sightsee among the stars.

Monthly Club Meetings

Our monthly meetings feature astromomy updates, sky reports and guest speakers. We have hosted leading professional astronomers, renonwned amateurs -- and, of course, our own club members, who have quite an impressive list of achievements among them.

We meet the 2nd Friday of every month, at 7:30 pm at New Roads School, in the Huearta Room of the new green building at the west end of the campus.

Star Parties

A "star party" is just our name for a get-together under the stars, with telescopes, binoculars ... and hopefully, a clear sky. These are held around the newmoon of every month when the sky, free from bright moonlight, is a-glitter with stars.

We have two favorite locations, and traditionally schedule two star parties each month: Charmlee Park, our local sight, off the PCH north of Malibu, for evening viewing -- and Mt. Pinos, our dark-sky sight, off the I-5 Freeway near Gorman, for overnight trips. We sometimes take longer trips to the ultra-dark skies of Joshua Tree, East Mojave, or White Mountain.

Tours

We have motored up to mountain-top observatories (Mt. Wilson, Mt. Palomar), romped along radio telescopes (Goldstone Tracking Station), soaked up solar studies (San Fernando Observatory) and played in planetaria (LA Valley College, Santa Monica College). We still haven't had enough, so look for more to come! Some of us are regulars at astronomy talks and conferences elsewhere in the area, so we're a good resource for astronomical happenings. Groups of us have even traveled to the giant Big Bear and Texas Star Parties, and to several eclipses. Perhaps you'll join us on the next great adventure?

Club Newsletter

The Observer, our own monthly newsletter, is printed and mailed to all members. It contains astonomy news, announcements, important dates and reports on our various activities.

Membership

Regular club dues are $25 per year, payable in January. Rates are prorated from July to the end of the year (July $12.50 and Oct. $6.25). Full time-student dues are $10 per year.

Members receive our monthly newsletter, The Observer.

Even if you are not a member, everyone interested in Astronomy is welcome to join us for our monthly meetings! (See above!)
